The new PASMO system was launched on Sunday, March 18. In brief, it is a new prepaid card for the massive Kanto region’s transit system and beyond to replace the aging SUICA, JR only system. This morning there were blue lights going off everywhere at the all the new ticket gates that have been getting updated the past few months. PASMO is similar to the SUICA system, but it includes a ton of train lines and buses compared to the JR only SUICA cards.

What is PASMO?

The great thing is that currently I have to carry 2 passes for my route to work. One for the Yokohama Subway & one for the Odakyu Railway. After we move I will need 3 passes to get to work…Yokohama City Bus, JR, & Odakyu Railway. Now all I need is 1 card and I can also use it on the weekends for all my misc. travel. I have not got my card PASMO card, yet. I hope they’re a lot slimmer than the SUICA cards. Those were fatties to carry in your wallet everyday. We will see!

That’s a tough one. The good thing is that March 24th is a Saturday, so I won’t be at work. There is no way for me to not use a computer at work. I pledge that I will not use any of my Macs that day. No surfing, no iTunes, no e-mail. Can you do it? It’s only a day. A looooong day. So, shutdown your computer on March 24th and remember what it was like before computers.

Good luck.

Will the size of Google’s commuter bus system change the transportation game in the U.S.? Or will it just be a way for major companies to attract the best workforce? It would be great if all large companies in major cities looked into a program like this. A lot more flexible than a public system.
Read more, in the NYTimes article.

In Japan, it is already a standard for all companies (that I know of) to pay for all the costs of the employees’ commute to and from work for public transportation. That is a major reason why the public transportation system is so great. I just wish we had the nice black leather seats, like Google. After sitting down on a worn out bench on the Sotetsu line today, my bum was totally numb after 25 minutes. Even after a numb ass, I totally enjoy the down time on the way to and from work, by not having to be alert at the wheel while driving at 70+ mph or even worse staying patient and alert in bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic.
