What better way to learn Jonathan’s song “Still Alive” for the ending credits of the game Portal than watching this video.

Hi there! My name is Amanda. I found your blog while doing a google search for New Years in Japan. My husband is also an engineer working for Bosch. We are living in Minato Mirai, and are also from Detroit area. We have been here since April and will be here until 2010 or 11. Anyways we are looking for info on Christmas and New Years. Mostly New Years, like what goes on and where to go! I was wondering if you could give any help. You can email me back at amanda.droke@onesourcetalent.com. Hope to hear from you! Thanks!

@Amanda – New Years in Japan…boring. Most Japanese families just stay home and eat their traditional New Year’s food and watch a TV special that is just one super-extended variety show waiting for midnight. Extremely boring. While some families will spend big coin and enjoy dinner at a fancy hotel and attend a concert or spend the night at a resort/onsen. If you are looking for Western-style fun, I know that a ton of pubs, bars, & clubs in Yokohama and in areas of Tokyo (like Roppongi) have all night parties. But, with kids we just stay home and spend time with the in-laws in an attempt to enjoy a traditional boring holiday.
Places like Yokohama Country and Athletic Club (YCAC) in Negishi have an event with dinner, dancing, etc.
Christmas exists only in stores and shopping malls. Lots of light displays can be seen around the Minato Mirai area with ice skating at Aka Renga Soko (Red Brick Warehouse) Most people don’t celebrate anything and most people work on Christmas as it is not a National holiday (as New Year’s is their important time). None the less, most families still prepare gifts for their children for opening on Christmas morning. If you are lucky you might see a little snow this winter. Most years there is just a few flakes in the air. Last winter we got lucky (in my opinion) and we enjoyed a few lasting snowfalls.
Hope you and your husband enjoy your stay in Yokohama and if you don’t mind crazy kids, maybe we could met up in the Minato Mirai area sometime. If you ever have any other questions feel free to ask.

Hey thanks for the info! Meeting up would be fun. We don’t mind kids at all. And I think my husband would love to meet up with another American with similar interests. It would also be nice just to have some one to hang out with once in a while also. We had met some American baseball players living in our building but they have all gone home now. So weird that your name is Steve. My husbands name is also Steve. LOL. We also have skype its under Amanda Dumouchelle if you want to look us up and text back and forth, and maybe get together. I also have myspace if you guys do.. http://www.myspace.com/preciousmemoriesbasel. I am actually going home for a few weeks in November and then we are going to Thailand for a couple of weeks. So if we do meet up it will probably be after Christmas! Well thanks again and maybe we will hear from you soon!
